Review: Ctrl-Alt-Del Animated Series, Ep. 4

Episode 4
Running Time: 5:58 (goddamnit)
Summary: Sadly, I will admit I laughed at this one. Ethan is retarded, they inform me he IS engaged to Lilah, and then the Swedish Chef (yes, the muppet) menaces the little 'tard. Something tells me this will be my pick of the season.

I pretty much summed up the entire episode up there, so instead of the traditional "review", today I'm going to make a list of the ways Ethan is brain-damaged, as per this episode, then I'm going to show the Swedish Chef assaulting him. It's pretty much the best you can get from this.

* He "went shopping once, and came back with 16 bags of bananas".
* Is completely unable to open a refrigerator. Then again, maybe nobody was skilled enough to DRAW an open refrigerator. (They could barely draw it closed!) It's up for grabs.

Seriously. I can't be the only one looking at that and thinking "Look! Escher's Fridge!"
* Somehow manages to go from "perfectly healthy" to "collapsing from hunger" in 24 hours. (Hint: I can tell you from experience this does not happen, even on a fast.)
* The line "Hello? Phone people?" pretty much speaks for itself. Incidentally, Lucas' expression of quiet joy there is pretty much what I had on my face watching this scene.

Fun fact: all of these items listed so far are in the opening alone.

Also just a random thought: Lilah is damaged goods. She obviously looks at Ethan as a "fixer-upper" man, someone she can reshape into the perfect companion. It's the only way I can think of her wanting to marry the man who responds to "I was thinking..." with "DON'T DO THAT!", not to mention trying to teach the mentally handicapped to cook. Okay, back to the list now.

Okay, back to the list NOW. Seriously, I cannot tell you how much that makes me laugh, despite every part of me going "the strings come from BELOW on a muppet". Stupid nitpick, given things like the Fridge Out of Space and Time from earlier, but hey, at least I'm not trying to figure out if the bigass Guitar Hero controllers in the "NO THINKING" scene are to scale.

* Brags that he can ignite anything. Including a mixer.
* Basically steals a gag from Mr. Bean, of all things (note: not a compliment) as Ethan 'balances' one chicken with the other stuck on his hand.

* Incidentally, I think Lilah's a little slow herself, fixer-upper theory or not. Look at the expression of pride on her face as Ethan, uh... where did he get that many eggs?

I'd also like to point out that this whole sequence is a montage. Set to banjo music. I really don't need to add much more on that topic, I should hope.

* Random explosion in the kitchen. We never learn what exploded, nor is it referred to again, even when someone checks on him.

And just to round out, I promised I'd end on this:

HMM, BORK BORK BORK...

I don't think I'll ever tire of that scene.

I can't help but feel like these CAD cartoon reviews are dragging this blog down.

I was attracted to this blog over Solomon's initially because it was extremely informative as well as entertaining, but I can't help but feel like this blog is falling into the review-a-day format as well.

Maybe this is just me, but can we be honest with ourselves: After four of these reviews, I think we pretty much get it now. Buckley is a talentless hack, this cartoon is drawn and animated horribly, and all of these characters are wholly flavorless.

Can we move on to something else now?

Actually, this cartoon is starting to sound pretty good.

This is a great site you've got going. I got linked here from Solomon, and just finished reading all of your pieces. Your take on CAD is apt - the little bits of reality that seep through smeg head's fantasy comic world are chilling. I think the end of the intro sequence, when everyone's grouped around to watch him - HIM! - surf the internet, really sums up his narcissism.

Anyway, just dropping you a line to let you know you're now bookmarked in my 'Entertainment' folder. Keep up the good work.

I just read the first comment - as they say on 4chan, MOAR!

If there's anything to complain about with your posts, it's that you hold back, and don't go into as much depth tearing apart these lunatics as you could. The informative aspects are what legitimize your writing, but it's the drama that I'm here to see.

Cheers.

I agree with anonymous #1.

For people like me, who never cared about Buckley (yes, we exist) much less umpteen Buckley-centric posts in a row, the only upside to these sorts of articles is that there's no direct link to his webcomic, through which he could otherwise gain ad-money,

Or at least, I'm not about to go looking for it...

Have to agree on this on-going CAD episode reviews, you seem to be running short of material/interest as they continue on.

For Lilah, I've always seen her as a bit of wish-fulfillment on Buckley's part. Ethan seems partly a Buckley proxy, somehow the image of that kid in high-school who tried too hard to be funny with sad, wacky antics seems to fit naturally with Buckley; and Ethan is largely a shallow reprisal of that role in gaming webcomic form. To me at least, Lilah seems to be the girl of Buckley's desires. No hesitation to let Ethan indulge in anything, apparently attractive, a hardcore gamer, and so on. Hell, basically she leaves Ethan alone except for gaming/sex.

I think watching all of these craptoons are wearing your sanity down to the point of finding amusement in them..

Also, CAD is stealing jokes from The Simpsons/Family Guy.. But.. Who doesn't?

Stealing from Family Guy?

...

How does that even work?

You've never known someone with poor blood sugar control. I've seen someone collapse after 21 hours of a fast.

I made him eat, then and there.

no, this is not normal
